This lovely moth hung out on my porch all day today (08/27/08). I thought vaguely about a "Death's Head Moth", but even though I didn' t know where they are from, I know they sure probably weren't in ABILENE, TX... and when I looked it up I was right: none in N. America. So even though I think that lil furry patch on his back looks just like a skull, I'm now thinking Rustic Sphinx Moth...? lizberry81 posted a photo:

This is in the late 1940's...my grandfather was with the Abilene Fire Dept.
for 40 years. He made Asst. Chief and retired in 1981. I really must give
credit to my grandmother, Bama...she took this wonderful photo all those
